What soft-touch lamination is
Soft-touch lamination is a premium BOPP-based matte lamination film with a distinctive velvety, rubberised surface that feels like suede or peach skin when touched. It is the most tactilely distinctive lamination finish available in commercial printing — the surface creates an immediate sensory experience that communicates premium quality before any printed content is read. It is significantly more expensive than standard gloss or matte lamination (3–5× the cost per m²) but is widely specified for luxury packaging, premium cosmetics, high-end branding materials, and book covers where the tactile quality is part of the brand experience.
How soft-touch film is made
Soft-touch film is a coextruded BOPP film where the outer surface is coated with a specialised matte coating that contains microscopic rubber particles. These particles create the velvety texture. The coating weight and particle distribution determine the softness intensity — premium soft-touch films have a more uniform, deeper velvety feel than economy grades.
In India, soft-touch lamination film is supplied by Cosmo First (GreenVision Velvet series), VIBAC Group, and imported grades from Taghleef Industries. The quality difference between premium and economy soft-touch is clearly perceivable — specify premium grade for luxury brand work.
Applications in India
- Cosmetics and personal care packaging: Lipstick boxes, perfume packaging, premium skincare cartons — the soft-touch surface creates an immediate luxury association
- Alcohol packaging: Whisky and wine gift boxes, premium spirits packaging
- Corporate stationery and annual reports: Annual report covers, premium corporate brochures, investor presentations
- Book covers: Non-fiction, business books, and premium coffee table books
- Premium FMCG packaging: Chocolate boxes, premium tea packaging, confectionery gift sets
Soft-touch + spot UV — the premium finish combination
The most impactful premium packaging finish combination in India's current market is soft-touch matte lamination with spot UV varnish. The contrast between the velvety matte soft-touch surface and the hard-gloss spot UV creates a dramatic tactile and visual effect — the spot UV elements appear to float on the surface. This combination is specified across luxury perfume, cosmetics, premium spirits packaging, and award-winning book covers.
Anti-scuff matte lamination
Anti-scuff matte lamination is a premium matte BOPP film with an additional surface treatment that significantly improves scuff and scratch resistance. Standard matte lamination shows finger marks and light scratches readily — anti-scuff matte retains a clean appearance through handling. Used for packaging that goes through extended retail handling (book covers, cosmetics on open-sell fixtures, take-away food packaging).
Holographic lamination films
Holographic lamination films are BOPP-based films with an embossed holographic or prismatic pattern on the surface — the entire laminated area has a rainbow metallic shimmer effect. Used primarily for decorative packaging (greeting cards, giftwrap, party supplies) rather than functional applications. The holographic effect is applied across the full surface — for localised holographic effects, holographic hot-stamp foil is used instead.
Biodegradable and recyclable lamination alternatives
India's EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) regulations under the Plastic Waste Management Rules 2022 are creating demand for recyclable alternatives to BOPP lamination. Options now available in India include:
- BOPP mono-material lamination: Full BOPP structure (both film and substrate BOPP) — recyclable in BOPP stream
- Aqueous coating alternatives: High-build aqueous coating can replace lamination for some applications — fully recyclable with paper
- Cellulose-based films (NatureFlex): Compostable biodegradable film from Innovia (CCL) — imported, higher cost, growing adoption in premium sustainable packaging
