Finishing Equipment Brands — Complete History & All Models

Every major finishing equipment brand in India — Bobst (die-cutting, folder-gluers), Polar (guillotine cutters), MBO and Stahl (folding), Heidelberg Stahlfolder, Wohlenberg. The machines that turn printed sheets into finished packaging, books, and commercial print.

Finishing equipment in India — why it matters as much as the press

A printed sheet is only half the job. For packaging, it needs to be cut, creased, and glued into a carton (folder-gluer). For commercial print, it needs to be folded, gathered, stitched, and trimmed (bindery). For every print job, it needs to be cut to final size (guillotine). The finishing equipment defines the final quality, speed, and economics of any print operation as much as the press itself. India's packaging and commercial print finishing equipment market is dominated by a small number of premium European brands — Bobst, Polar, MBO/Stahl — alongside Heidelberg's finishing range and German cutter specialists like Wohlenberg and Perfecta.

Bobst in India — the premium packaging finishing standard

Bobst Group was founded in 1890 in Lausanne, Switzerland by Joseph Bobst. Today Bobst is the world's largest manufacturer of equipment for the production of packaging made from folding carton, corrugated board, flexible materials, and labels. In India, Bobst is the defining brand for premium folding carton finishing — their die-cutters (Mastercut, Expertcut), folder-gluers (Expertfold, Masterfold), and laminating equipment are found in India's largest folding carton converters. If you buy premium pharmaceutical packaging, FMCG cartons, or luxury food packaging in India, it was almost certainly finished on a Bobst machine. Bobst folding carton ↗

Polar in India — the guillotine cutter standard

Polar-Mohr has been manufacturing paper-cutting machines in Germany since 1906. Today Polar is the world's leading manufacturer of guillotine paper cutters — their machines are found in virtually every significant print operation globally. In India, the Polar name is synonymous with "cutter" in the same way "Xerox" became synonymous with photocopying. A Polar cutter in an Indian print plant is taken for granted — the question is not whether they have a Polar but which model. The Polar 78, 92, and 115 are the three most common sizes in Indian commercial and packaging print.

MBO and Stahl are both folding machine brands owned by the MBO Group. Stahl is the older brand (est. 1923) and historically was the premium folding machine brand used by high-quality bookbinders and commercial printers. MBO (est. 1946) positioned as a production-focused alternative. Today both brands continue under the MBO Group umbrella — Stahl for premium/commercial folding, MBO for production folding. In India, both MBO and Stahl folding machines are found in book printers, commercial printers producing multi-page brochures, and direct mail operations. The most common configurations are 4-knife combination folders for signatures and buckle folders for simple flat folding.

Heidelberg Stahlfolder
Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG · Heidelberg, Germany · Stahlfolder brand since 2004
Heidelberg Stahlfolder — workflow integration advantage

Heidelberg acquired Stahlfolder in 2004 and markets folding machines under the Heidelberg Stahlfolder brand. Like the Suprasetter CTP, the Stahlfolder's primary India market advantage is workflow integration — Stahlfolder machines integrate with Prinect workflow for automatic folding program setup based on the job data from the press. For print plants running a complete Heidelberg ecosystem (Speedmaster press + Suprasetter CTP + Prinect workflow + Stahlfolder), makeready times across the entire workflow are minimised. Heidelberg India sells Stahlfolder through the same sales and service network as their presses.

Wohlenberg in India — Perfecta cutters and bookbinding lines

Wohlenberg has been manufacturing printing post-press equipment in Hannover since 1898. Their Perfecta brand of guillotine cutters competes directly with Polar — and in India, Perfecta cutters are found as the alternative to Polar in many commercial and book printing operations. The Wohlenberg three-knife trimmer is standard in India's book manufacturing lines alongside saddle-stitching or perfect binding equipment.
